In the Department of Crop and Soil Environmental Sciences we are proud of our past and excited about the future. Founded in 1908 as the “Department of Agronomy”, and renamed in 1987 to “Crop and Soil Environmental Sciences”, our department continues to build upon more than a century of accomplishments. Our faculty and staff are dedicated to education, research, and extension for environmental protection and sustainable crop production and land use in Virginia and beyond. Our department continues to be committed to the land-grant mission of Virginia Tech. Please visit our departmental website to find more about our values, vision, and mission, and our new strategic plan.

One challenge faced by our department is declining state funding. Funding provided by direct appropriations from the Commonwealth of Virginia constitutes only 19 percent of Virginia Tech's total annual budget. Therefore, private donations will be vital for us to maintain and improve the quality of our programs. Your contributions help us:

  • Recruit high-quality graduate and undergraduate students
  • Provide scholarships for deserving students
  • Enhance student learning experiences
  • Improve our facilities
  • Support recognition of staff and faculty
  • Retain and attract outstanding faculty

How to Give
Our department has more than 1400 alumni and many friends and supporters. We hope that you’ll consider giving to support CSES and its students, faculty, and staff. Gifts can be designated to any program at the University. You can securely make a pledge by selecting the Make a Gift online pledge form. Here you can make a payment on an existing pledge, make a gift using credit card, request information on donating securities, making a planned gift, or using electronic funds from your checking account. When completing this form, please designate your gift directly to CSES by selecting “Enter your own” button to the right of the gift amount line, then type in Crop & Soil Environmental Sciences, CALS along with any other specific designation information you would like to include. If you have questions or would like more information about department needs, please contact me at 540-231-9775 or
If you are affiliated with a company that matches contributions to higher education, please contact your company's human resources department to learn about your company's matching gift policies. Virginia Tech receives a sizable amount of gifts from company matching funds, thanks to donors like you who request the form from their participating employers and send it to Virginia Tech with their gifts.
Finally, thank you to all of our donors. Your gifts really do make a difference for CSES. Please come to campus sometime and see the difference you’re making!
