The Department of Crop and Soil Environmental Sciences has excellent laboratory and field facilities for the use of our faculty, staff, and students. A few of these are described below. Greenhouse facilities are available on campus. In addition, CSES personnel conduct research across the Commonwealth of Virginia at several Agricultural Research and Extension Centers.
Geospatial Analysis Laboratory
The geospatial analysis lab specializes in the use of GIS and other spatial technologies to enhance and add capability to our research programs in agriculture, land management and reclamation, and environmental analyses.
The lab contains three computer workstations available for faculty and student research with one-on-one training and support available. Software packages installed in the lab include ArcGIS, Surfer, Trimble GPS Pathfinder, ERDAS Imagine, ENVI/IDL and SAS/JMP.
Northern Piedmont Center
The Northern Piedmont Center supports crop production and environmental science research for the Department of Crop and Soil Environmental Sciences and our research partners.
Turfgrass Research Center
The Turfgrass Research Center (TRC) is the primary site for campus-based field research efforts of the Crop and Soil Environmental Science, Entomology, Plant Pathology, Physiology & Weed Science departments. The center serves as an outdoor teaching laboratory for undergraduates, graduate students, and Extension outreach efforts. The annual Turfgrass Research Field Day is hosted at the TRC each fall. The site has approximately 20 acres of maintained turfgrass that includes both warm- and cool-season species. It is also the location of the Schmidt Pavilion, a popular outdoor meeting venue for CSES and allied departments.
College Farm Operation
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences farm facility exists to support the research, instruction, and outreach missions of the college. This land resource and its improvements serve critical roles in the plant and livestock sciences and their related fields by making possible hands-on instruction for undergraduate students, an abundance of opportunities for faculty and graduate student research, and numerous outreach activities throughout the year.
