Profile: I am a native of the great state of Tennessee, and grew up in the dark-fired tobacco capital of the World. Do you know where that is? I spent my childhood working on a 460 acre registered Polled Hereford farm lying between the Little West Fork and East Fork Creeks. I was active in 4-H and FFR and originally wanted to be an extension agent. However, after arriving at the University of Tennessee, I decided on a career in plant
breeding. After receiving my B.S. degree, I headed for real wheat country in the Palouse of Washington state where I received my M.S. and lots of training in breeding for disease resistance. Longing for the hardwoods, I migrated eastward, stopping for a spell in Lincoln, Nebraska where I obtained my PH.D. and broadened my scope to include wheat quality. I
continued eastward, but took a divergent turn north where I spent 15 months training at the Cereal Rust Lab in St. Paul, Minnesota. Long frigid winters drove me south, and I settled among the hardwoods once again, and have been developing wheat and barley varieties at Virginia Tech since 1989.
