| 29 August 2007 | Amy Gail Fannon Senior in CSES has been named a Golden Opportunity Scholar by the CSSA Golden Opportunity Scholars Institute. Fifteen promising scholars nation-wide will be matched with faculty mentors at the International ASA-CSSA-SSSA meetings in New Orleans in November. During the meeting, they will interact one-on-one with mentors and participate in special group activities. Scholars and mentors will be encouraged to stay in contact throughout the coming year.(Source: CSA News, September 2007) Amy Gail is from Pennington Gap (Lee County), Virginia, and currently serves as President of the Virginia Tech Agronomy Club. |
| 16 July 2007 | Mike Weeks was awarded first place in the graduate student presentation competition at the American Peanut Research and Education Society meeting. Mike did an excellent job presenting his research in and competed against many talented M.S. and Ph.D. students presenting topics ranging from molecular biology to basic agronomics |

| 22 June 2007 | Virginia Tech and CSES Alumnus Dr. Jay Bell (B.S. 1980, M.S, 1982) has been named Associate Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs, College of Food, Agriculture, and Natural Resources, University of Minnesota. | June 2006 | Thoroughbred barley, a new release from the small grain breeding program headed by Dr. Carl Griffey in CSES has found well suited for a "value enhanced" use by an entrepeneur in Eastern Virgina. | 04 June 2007 | Dr. Harlan E. White, retired Extension Forage Specialist in CSES passed away today. Dr. White was an innovator and educator extraordinare, and had a profound impact on the forage industry in Virgina. Dr. White had remained in the Blacksburg area following retirement and was still very active in the Virginia Forage and Grassland Council. Additional information here. |

| 12 January 2007 | Mike Weeks, graduate student in Crop & Soil Environmental Sciences, received first place in the oral presentation competition at 2007 Beltwide Cotton Physiology Conference. Weeks’ presentation was titled “Benefits of Perennial Grasses in Rotation with Cotton and Peanut in the Virginia Cotton Belt. |
| January 2007 | The Virginia Crop Production Association (VACPA) honored Mark Alley, W.G. Wysor Professor of Crop and Soil Environmental Sciences, with the President's Achievement Award for outstanding services rendered in 2006. The award recognizes Alley for his services as an advisor to the group's board of directors and on the Annual Meeting Program Development Committee. Through Alley's leadership and support, VACPA has transformed its annual meeting program into one that is recognized by the industry not only within Virginia but surrounding states as a professional meeting well worth attending. |

Certificate of Merit Awarded for "The Mid-Atlantic Nutrient Management Handbook,
Virginia Cooperative Extension". The book was edited and printed at Virginia Tech, and
