Student Teams

Soil Judging Team

Description- The Soil Judging Team is an intercollegiate competition sponsored by the American Society of Agronomy. Teams of four students (maximum of eight per school) are given 50 minutes to examine and describe a soil in a large pit and then interpret the important features of the soil such as rooting depth, restrictive layers, hydrology, limitations for use, parent material, position, relief, runoff, erosion, and classification. Student answers are matched against those of official judges. Undergraduate students representing about 50 colleges and universities compete in one of six week-long regional contests each fall. Virginia Tech competes in the Southeast Region (add web site) with twelve other schools. The top qualifying teams (22 to 24 in all) advance to the week-long national championship in the spring. Contests have been held on a rotational basis across the continental US since 1960. Viriginia Tech has a long and successful record of achievement at regional and national contests. The Soil Judgers train by taking CSES 3144 Soil Description and Interptetation. This web site also contains information on the Soil Judging Team. Soil Judging at Virginia Tech is an official student organziation on campus. Dr. John Galbraith is advisor and officers are selected each year.
